My name is Marcus and I’m a Sculpted Concrete Artisan

I’ve always had a fascination with reproducing the beauty of natural environments, ever since my many childhood trips through the natural wildlife gallery at the Royal Alberta Museum. Rather than the animals, it was the highly-detailed faux landscapes that amazed me. Seeing the beauty of river valleys and mountainsides recreated so carefully inspired my attention to subtle realistic detail and my appreciation for natural composition.

Before jumping into the medium of concrete, I practiced carving and painting techniques through scale model making for tabletop gaming. For almost 20 years I’ve focused on creating realism and immersion through my work - techniques for recreating the texture and form and layered colours that are convincingly natural. My work started with foam and other materials, but discovering the world of carved concrete reignited the passion that began with seeing the beauty of Canadian landscapes in the museum many years ago.

I approach each project with the goals of realism and functionality. I aspire to create something as authentic as nature, but shape it to fit its purpose in a way that isn’t always possible with the irregularities of real stone. With carved concrete, I can create something that intentionally directs the eye or serves a specific function. Rock can be incredibly unique - being able to shape it by hand means it is always possible to design the perfect piece, whether that is a continuous slab for a feature wall or matching rock elements in a kitchen, bathroom, or garden.

Carving each concrete form by hand, I can create something that looks authentic and natural while including design elements that make each piece functional. I believe the forms, textures, and colours of the natural world can bring something unique to our homes and businesses, especially in a place as defined by rocky landscapes as the North.
